“Nude makeup doesn’t mean no makeup, it means the shades that are perfect for your skintone. It’s been my signature look since I began my career as a makeup artist.” ~Bobbi Brown

Yes, yes, and yes! I remember my first Bobbi Brown purchase; a three-pan nude eyeshadow palette. When I saw it, I immediately had to have it. Life changing! The colors were beautiful, and for my complexion and blue eyes, perfect. For the first time, I felt like everything worked. And from then on, I was a fan of this makeup line for life. But seriously, has it been 25 years? Bobbi, you haven’t aged a day!

The eyeshadows in The Nude Library were selected from these palettes:

  • Tortoise Shell
  • Desert Twilight
  • Neons & Nudes
  • Stonewashed Nudes
  • Nectar & Nude

Bobbi Brown Nude Library Palette_inside

I’m fighting with myself on whether I *need* The Nude Library, as I already have most, if not all, of the individual palettes. But having all those shadows in one gorgeous, convenient place…it’s so tempting! Plus, The Nude Library is going to sell out in a minute, and then I won’t be able to get it. There’s nothing worse than buyer’s regret.

Bobbi Brown The Nude Library 25th Anniversary Edition Palette ($200) is a limited-edition and available now at Nordstrom and coming soon to all Bobbi Brown counters and bobbibrowncosmetics.com. For the Bobbi Brown collectors out there, it’s a must-have!

Lip Service

There’s a new injectable filler in town, and it’s something to smile about. In June, the FDA approved Volbella for plumping lips and correcting those pesky fine lines above the mouth that doctors call perioral rhytids. The vertical wrinkles are also known as “smoker’s lines,” and you don’t have to be a nicotine fiend to develop them.

Until now perioral lines have been very difficult to treat without running the risk of inflating nearby areas. “Getting filler in etched-in lines is always a challenge,” says Laguna Niguel dermatologist Lorrie Klein. “These lines are similar to pleats, and like pleats in fabric, you can’t iron them out very easily.” Volbella is hyaluronic-acid filler like Juvéderm (both manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Allergan) or Restylane, but it’s thinner and smoother. That makes it easier to inject with precision.

Dr. Klein expects Volbella will be available in doctors’ offices starting in October.

Nailing it

Having harsh chemicals brushed on your nails hardly sounds like a pampering experience. Yet, that’s just what happens at run-of-the-mill mani-pedi shops, where strong fumes are a clear sign that something not entirely healthy is taking place.

Enter Polished Perfect by Twila True, Orange County’s luxury nail salons. A new location opened mid-August at Irvine’s Los Olivos Marketplace. Here the 40 shades of lacquer are all a “5-free formula.” That means they don’t contain a chemistry set’s worth of toluene, DBP, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin and camphor. Polished Perfect’s “beauty with a conscience” practices also include skipping the whirlpool pedicure tubs (so you’re not plunging your footsies into a pool that contains a buildup of other people’s sloughed-off
cells) and giving each client her own buffer and file to prevent cross-contamination.

Between salon visits, you can shop Twila True’s online beauty boutique, which includes the lacquers, as well as body scrubs, soaks and creams.

And, by the way, the actual Twila True is a Newport Beach philanthropist and entrepreneur whose causes include improving conditions both among her own Oglala Sioux Tribe in Pine Ridge, S. D., and in China’s state-run orphanages.

How to Make Infused Water

One of my new year’s resolutions is to drink more water and so far I’ve done a good job sticking to it. I feel more hydrated, my skin looks amazing, and I’ve even dropped a few pounds. I’ve made water a daily habit and I was able to do this by making water less boring for me. My journey to boring-free water began last year when I learned about infused water.

Infused water is a great way to drink more water, helps with weight loss efforts, and helps you get more vitamins while also treating yourself with a little bit of sweetness. We all know that sugary drinks aren’t good for us (even when additional sugar is not added). Infused water gives many of the benefits of both fruit and water without some of the potential negatives like sugars and additional calories.

Just What Is Infused Water?

Infused water, sometimes also referred to as detox water or fruit flavored water, refers to water that is filled with fruit, veggies, and maybe even certain types of herbs to infuse strong flavor and antioxidants into the water itself.

Everyone knows they should drink a lot of water, but most people find water so plain that it’s hard to do. Flavoring the water with fruit and veggies is a great way to bring a delicious and lasting flavor to water that will cause you to want more and make getting that daily amount of water an easy task instead of a rough chore.

What Are the Benefits of Infused Water?

There are many benefits that infused water brings to the table. Aside from tasting better and having a wide variety of tastes because of all the different fruits and veggies that can be mixed with water, there are multiple benefits to water that’s been infused with herbs, fruits, and vegetables.

One reason is there’s less sugar. Commercially produced “natural flavored water” often has unhealthy chemicals or even has calories from sugar and sugar substitutes. Kind of defeats the whole purpose of drinking water for your health, doesn’t it?

You’ll also notice instant benefits from the improved hydration. This isn’t a water substitute – it’s still fully water which means you get all the benefits to go along with that delicious extra flavor and taste!

Many people claim they can feel the toxins wash out of their system with infused water, and there’s no question the extra antioxidants and hydration mean you will keep food moving through your system during digestion, feel fuller more often to prevent over eating, and being fully hydrated can even help your body release fat cells and improve your overall mood.

Add in all the benefits that simply come from feeling healthier, feeling better, and not suffering from dehydration problems and it quickly becomes clear why this practice has become so popular.

How to Make Your Own Infused Water

The best part of all this might be the fact that infused water is so easy to make. Literally anyone can learn how to do it!

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients

Think about what type of flavor combinations you want. Apple and cinnamon go together really well. So does mint with citrus. Some like strawberries and sliced cucumbers taste delicious even alone. Think about what flavors you want to make. Here are some ingredients to choose from:

  • Fruits: berries, citrus, tropical fruits, melon, pears, apples
  • Vegetables: cucumbers, fennel, celery
  • Herbs: mint, rosemary, basil, thyme, cilantro, black tea, chamomile, sage, dill
  • Spices: ginger, cinnamon sticks, vanilla bean, cardamom pods

Step 2: Slice Or Cut As Needed

The infusion works better with fruits and veggies that are sliced, so plan on creating thin slices of apple, cutting strawberries in half, and making the other cuts necessary to have a solid amount of fruit or veggies ready to add to a pitcher of water.

Generally you want a half gallon or full gallon to add the fruit or veggies to. This helps to guarantee you have plenty of flavorful water to drink and that there’s plenty of space for the flavor to soak in.

Step 3: Let Sit

Many people believe that letting infused water sit overnight gives you the best or strongest flavor the next day, but most combinations are fantastic after 4 hours and some even sooner than that. Citrus, for example, infuses very quickly and can sometimes be ready in minutes.

Step 4: Don’t Forget To Re-Fill!

You’ll enjoy drinking your water creations so much you may forget to re-fill them. Don’t make this rookie mistake!

Getting in on this health trend of drinking fruit infused water really is just this easy.

Awesome Flavor Combinations

strawberry infused water

The flavor combinations below are some of my favorites. For example, strawberries alone in water are awesome, as is pineapple if you love tropical fruit. However by adding a couple flavors together you can create some amazing infused water flavors that will make you a permanent fan!

Citrus Blueberry Mint Combinations

You really can’t go wrong mixing and matching these three. Blueberry lemon mint is a very popular one, but if you prefer a little bit more tartness replace the lemon with lime for an equally delicious effect! There’s just something about blueberry and citrus that mixes so well in water, and throwing in some mint is the perfect touch.

Cucumber Lime Mint

cucumber lime mint infused water

Cucumber water has long been a “secret” of many high end restaurants to add that delicious extra flavor, and what isn’t made more refreshing by mint and lime? Make sure to peel the cucumbers before adding the slices as the outer skin can cause some bitterness to seep in that messes up the flavor. See my version of this recipe here.

Cherry Lime

Hey, why invent the wheel? There’s a reason this flavor is so popular with juice and it comes together in a beautiful way when you infuse these two sliced fruits with some water for a delicious refreshing flavor.

Apple Cinnamon

This is another flavor example that goes under “classic.” While this isn’t the most appealing for some people who want something a little more crisp with their water, it is a definite winner if you love this flavor and can be a great counter if you’ve had a lot of overly crisp options (like a lot of different mint pairings).

Citrus & Ginger

lemon ginger infused water

Combining ginger with a citrus fruit like lemon or orange (or even grapefruit) creates a nice yin and yang where two very different flavors instead of clashing actually come together to create a great taste.

These are just a few favorite recipes you can try out, but of course a lot of the fun is figuring out what flavor combinations you love the most!

How long does Infused Water Last?

You should store infused water in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; however, drinking it the same day or the next day is optimal. Always drink un-refrigerated infused water the same day. Another good rule of thumb is to remove the infused fruits from the water after the second day. Doing so will help prevent fruits and vegetables from decomposing in the water and creating flavors that are undesirable.

Urban Decay All Nighter Liquid Foundation

Apparently Urban Decay wants us to live on the edge by daring us to use makeup that stays up all night; is that a challenge? 😉 New Urban Decay All Nighter Liquid Foundation is the ultimate long-lasting foundation. Inspired by the All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray, this foundation goes the distance.

All Nighter Liquid Foundation has one of the most complete formulas I’ve seen in a foundation. It’s waterproof and oil-absorbing, very pigmented (trust me, you don’t need much), with a true full-coverage, matte finish that doesn’t look “flat”, thanks to light-diffusing pigments. And it really is long-wearing.

I received a bottle of All Nighter Liquid Foundation in shade 3.5 (light with subtle pink undertone) for review purposes. I have a neutral undertone, and with the intense amount of pigmentation in All Nighter Foundation, while it seems like it would be close to the 3.25 (light with neutral undertone) I normally wear, this isn’t a shade that works for my skintone. My advice is to order the Urban Decay shade you usually wear, or get matched in-store.

Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation

That said, I really like All Nighter Foundation. I’ve always been a “no touchup” kind of gal, so this long-wear formula is everything. It easily goes 10+ hours; more when when set with the All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray. I found that no touchups were needed. I also like that whether I’ve prepped with a primer or not, on me the color stays true, and I haven’t experienced any oxidation. I have combination skin and like the oil-absorbing properties that All Nighter Foundation provides; especially nice in the warmer temperatures.

In terms of application, I’ve been applying All Nighter with my fingers and then buffing in with a foundation brush for an airbrushed, flawless finish. All Nighter Liquid Foundation ($40) is part of the Urban Decay Fall Collection, and comes in 24 shades. You can find it at Sephora, Ulta Beauty or at urbandecay.com.

What is your favorite foundation? Let me know in the comments!

MAC It’s A Strike! Collection

When you grow up in the Midwest, bowling is as much a part of your life as tailgating and the Packers. When I saw that M∙A∙C was releasing the It’s A Strike Collection, I instantly felt a connection. That ability to release collections that are relatable to all is one of the things M∙A∙C does best.

The M∙A∙C It’s A Strike Collection pays homage to all things bowling with a cute and kitchy Pearlmatte Face Powder, new shades of Lipstick and Cremesheen Glass, Studio Nail Lacquers and more. What I love about this collection is that there are deep shades for Fall, yet wearable everyday neutrals too…in other words, this is a great transitional makeup collection. What I’m not sure about is the eyeshadows. With so many palettes being released, is anyone still buying single eyeshadow shades anymore?

Highlights of the M∙A∙C It’s A Strike Collection include:

MAC Its A Strike Single Eyeshadows

Eye Shadow ($16) in

  • Gutter Gal –  off-white grey (matte)
  • Bowlarama –  bright lime green (satin)
  • Bowl Out – mid-tone grey (matte)
  • 300 Game – blackened cherry (matte)
  • Join My League? – dark espresso (matte)
  • Carbon – intense black (matte)

MAC It's a Strike PearlMatte Face Powder

Pearlmatte Face Powder ($27) in Trophy – multi-colour (pearlmatte)

MAC Its A Strike Lipsticks

Lipstick ($17) in

  • Honeylove – light beige toned with rose (matte)
  • Flat Out Fabulous – bright plum matte (retro matte)
  • All Fired Up – bright fuchsia matte (retro matte)
  • Perfect Score – deep red (matte)
  • Bowl Me Over – deep burnt brown (retro matte) (online exclusive)
  • Liquid Lurex – tarnished gold (dazzle) [online exclusive]
  • Babes and Balls – deep burgundy (matte) [online exclusive]

MAC Its A Strike Cremesheen Glass

Cremesheen Glass ($21) in:

  • It’s A Strike – soft nude pink
  • King Pin – deep chocolate mauve
  • Throw A Spare – fuchsia with pearl
  • Right Up My Alley – deep red
  • Spare Me – dark purple

MAC Its A Strike Studio Nail Lacquer

Studio Nail Lacquer ($13) in:

  • Rack ‘Em Up – cool deep khaki (cream)
  • 5 Pin – deep wine (cream)
  • Baby Split – sheer lime green (cream)

I was able to try several products from the It’s A Strike! Collection; the Pearlmatte Face Powder, Studio Nail Lacquer in 5 Pin, Cremesheen Glass in It’s A Strike and Lipstick in Honey Love (matte formula).

MAC It's a Strike group

I’ve never tried the Pearlmatte Face Powder formula before; I’ve tried Beauty Powders, and this is definitely different. Pearlmatte isn’t “matte” at all; the powder is a combination of pearlized and satin shades for a luminous glow. You can see that effect just looking at the tablet in the compact; it’s beautiful. I love the Cremesheen Glass formula and if you’re looking for a beautiful blush-nude color, pick It’s A Strike up. Honey Love Lipstick is a fleshy beige color with a matte formula.
MAC 5 Pin swatch

For Fall nails, don’t miss the Studio Nail Lacquer in 5 Pin. It’s a deep wine color with a cream finish. 5 Pin takes two coats for saturated coverage; the first coat was a bit streaky, but the second coat completely covers. This is my pick for Fall nails!

The M∙A∙C It’s A Strike Collection is available now in department stores, including Nordstrom and at maccosmetics.com. Pick your favorite league of colors and get in the game!

MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Rouge Lipstick

Lipstick is having a moment…again! It seems that beauty brands are churning out new lipstick collections almost weekly and we can’t get enough. MAKE UP FOR EVER has just launched the Artist Rouge Lipstick Collection and in a word, it’s fabulous.

The MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Rouge Lipstick Collection has 45 super-pigmented shades in two textures: 31 satiny creams and 14 velvety mattes. The range features only the best shades and is curated into five color groups, including Nude, Red, Pink, Berry and Artistic (bold shades like Midnight Blue and Mauve Violet) and four shade ranges (Light, Medium, Tan and Dark). Doing it that way insures that everyone can find the most flattering shade for their skin tone.

MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Rouge Lipsticks

I tried six shades of Artist Rouge Lipstick–and you can see in the above photo the broad range of colors available. What’s important to know is that the pigmentation and color payoff of these lipsticks is excellent; on par with lipsticks that cost double the price. The color is saturated, the formula long-wearing and very comfortable (thanks to Macadamia Oil) on the lips. I didn’t experience feathering or bleeding. The bullet is also uniquely shaped so that you don’t need a brush to expertly apply.

I have a drawer and shoe box full of lipsticks and there are very few that I could pull out that have the staying power plus the color payoff of Artist Rouge Lipsticks. C211 is considered the “universally flattering” shade; I love that one and also love C506, which is an edgy amethyst.

You can find MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Rouge Lipsticks ($22 each) at Sephora and at makeupforever.com. This is a lipstick collection you need to check out!

10 SEO Basics for Newbie Bloggers

Blogging can be an enriching experience for you and your readers for different reasons. For example, sharing your knowledge about a particular niche can give you the opportunity to start a business using your blog, though that is just the beginning.

Still, one of the key aspects of a successful blog is having readers. It is at this point when knowing a few SEO basics becomes crucial; thankfully, the following are 10 simple fundamentals about search engine optimization (SEO).

For a more in-depth look at SEO, you want to check out this article from Moz, The Beginner’s Guide to SEO.

1. Understand the Importance of Original Content

You probably heard about making relevant content, which usually refers to quality blog posts. Yes, Google does judge the quality of your site based on your blog posts, but there is much more to consider.

For one, it is important to use original photographs for your blog posts instead of looking elsewhere. Google looks favorably on sites that are using more original photographs or photos you can purchase online.

There are also a lot of free stock photo sites out there that you can use to create highly engaging images if you don’t have a camera or the money to spend on photos. Be sure to re-title your images once they are uploaded on your page as something related to title of your post. Did you know that you can optimize your images for SEO too? This post from Skillcrush shares how you can do just that!

It would be wise to upload other types of media as well, like original podcasts and videos.

2. Make Sure Your Theme is Clean

This aspect of your blog  is about keeping your website up-to-date. Make sure that your theme is fresh to ensure that it is functioning as it should and loading quickly. Don’t forget to use good cache plug-ins like WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache that help pages load faster.

Google loves a site that is friendly to different kinds of devices, so make sure that the theme is updated frequently. It would be a good idea to adopt newly developed themes instead of themes that are widely popular to show your uniqueness to Google.

It is important to go through your pages to ensure that your links are not broken or guiding readers to sites that are not being tended to.

3. Make Indexing Easier for Search Engines

A simple thing to do is to install a sitemap, which helps readers go through your old posts easier. The great thing about installing a sitemap is that it helps archive your posts, which gives search engines more access to your site.

4. Hook Up With Other Bloggers

This tip may be considered one of the oldest tricks in the book when it comes SEO and blogging, but it continues to be one of the most effective ways to improve your site.

What you want to do is look for other bloggers in your niche and begin to comment on their posts. This might prompt them to return the favor. The same goes with using popular blog posts as a reference, which could get your site mentioned on the blogger’s site as well.

5. Give Your Posts a Good Title

There are a few aspects of the title that need to be considered like the likelihood of someone writing it on a search engine. You don’t want to use a title that contains too many words that are not used in everyday speech.

It would be wise to use your keyword in the title, preferably in the beginning unless it doesn’t make sense. It is also important to stay away from titles that don’t clearly state what your article is about. You can be a little more artistic with your sentences throughout your piece, but your title should get right to the point.

6. Use the Right Coding for Your Text

It is important to use the right coding for the text in your blog post so that search engines like Google can categorize it correctly. For example, using H1 tags might make it easier for search engines to read your blog titles.

This is one reason why you should keep your titles as text rather than using an image creator to title your posts. Search engines will not read text within an image the same way, which is the reason that many seo experts don’t recommend it.

7. Use Old Posts to Your Advantage

Placing links on your site is a good idea, especially if you use your own posts on a related subject. This immediately makes a search engine take another look at your site, which is something that you want happening as often as possible. There is a higher chance of your page ranking better if search engines are constantly taking a closer look at your site.

Using your old posts helps those new posts rank a little higher too. This is a simple and clean trick, just as long as you do not add too many links to your page.

8. Re-Think the Way You Write Posts

It might not seem like a big deal, but blog readers and search engines do not like seeing big blocks of texts. These blocks are hard to read because they are simply too dense for now-a-days readers.

What you want to do is add more spaces between your texts. Consider small paragraphs about about three sentences before moving on to the next paragraph.

Updating all your posts might make a search engine believe that you are producing high quality posts, which is a good thing. It will be a matter of time before you are rewarded with a better ranking.

9. Permalinks Should be Simple

Permalinks, or your URLs, should be simple and contain no more than four words, including your main keyword. Sure, the URL can be a little longer, but do your best to keep the word count low as this makes it easier to share on social media.

A good and short URL is also easy to search for, which is something that search engines are also looking for. To change your permalinks, just go to your settings and look for permalink settings. One of the options should be Post Name, so choose that one.

Remember to install a Redirection plug-in if you are going to change old permalinks, or your pages might suffer the 404 error.

10. Keyword Stuffing is a Bad Thing

Search engines use tags or labels to categorize your post, and they can recognize if you are stuffing keywords. Tags and labels are there to make it easier for your readers to search for a post, so use these two as such.

Using keywords in your post is encouraged, but don’t do it too often. Make sure that you spread out the keyword. Search engines do not like seeing words repeated too often; in fact, it may be a good idea to run your posts through a word density calculator to make sure that you are not using the same words too often.

One plugin every new blogger should install on their site is Yoast SEO. This SEO plugin does a whole lot of things to help with search like creating a sitemap, prevention of keyword stuffing, permalink clean up and more. Did I also mention that it’s FREE? Simply follow this tutorial from WP Beginner to help you get it running on your blog.

Hopefully, these SEO basics help improve your blogging efforts seamlessly while you gain more readers.

Blowout Basics: Tips and Stylers for pro-results at home!

Nothing beats the feeling of leaving a salon with swingy, shiny, beautiful hair. A professional blowout takes your hair to “model on duty” status. By using the right techniques and products, you can do your own salon-worthy blowout, while protecting hair from breakage or other damage.

To get started, these are the tools you need: Blow dryer, paddle or round brush, hair clips, blow dry styling products.

Follow these steps for a bangin’ blowout:

  1. Start by rough drying hair with fingers until the hair is about 80% dry and then separate into sections using the clips.
  2. Next, apply a blowout styling product, working through hair from midshaft to ends.
  3. Blow dry using a paddle brush for sleek, straight hair or a large round brush for waves. Pro tip: Matt Fugate, Kérastase Paris Consulting Hairstylist, recommends a boar bristle brush to smooth out the frizz.Make sure to use the nozzle attachment on your blow dryer, as this allows you to control the air direction, adding smoothness and shine. Without the nozzle, the dryer will puff the hair cuticle, leading to frizz. Lift each section at the root to create volume.
  4. For added side volume, pull sections of hair above your ears up with your paddle brush and focus the heat of your blowdryer upwards.
  5. Finish by blasting cool air over hair to set style and seal the hair cuticle, helping to prevent frizz. If you’d like, use a curling iron on a few pieces around your face.

I’ve been testing blowout stylers and these are some of my newly discovered favorites (not listed in any particular order):

Blowout Stylers & Tools

  • Kerastase L’Incroyable Blowdry is a lotion that offers heat protection, frizz protection and the ability to reshape hair (the second or even third day beyond shampooing). Impressive results!
  • MOROCCANOIL® Blow-Dry Concentrate is great for thick/coarse hair. This serum smoothes hair, seals in shine and provides intense frizz control. And yes, it smells amazing!
